Running game key to Willow Canyon fate

In coach Michael Hudnutt’s offensive system, the Wildcats like to run the ball two-thirds of the time.

That’s good news since the team is stacked in the backfield. B.J. Scott, the team’s leading rusher a year ago returns for his junior season.

Scott rushed for nearly 900 yards in his sophomore season, and after fumbling problems early last season, honed his 11.1 second speed in the 100 meters into football success.

“He has great speed and really knows how to hit the crack (in the line),” Hudnutt said.

Scott is aided by the presence of senior fullbacks Cody Taylor and Daniel Torres as well as 5-foot-7 junior tailback Joey Cota.

Three-fifths of last year’s starting offensive line returns as seniors James Lee (left tackle), Gilbert Linares (left guard) and Micah Henige (center) are all back in the fold.

The line is also bolstered by a pair of talented tight ends in senior Justin Jones and junior K.C. Simmons, a transfer from Cactus High School.

Trey Clarida won a preseason battle as the team’s starting quarterback. The junior beat out senior Justin Corrigan.

“He was a backup behind a senior last year so he didn’t get a lot of playing time,” Hudnutt said about Clarida. “He’s very athletic and runs well. He’s a pretty good decision-maker and a good team leader. He’s really under control.”

After losing top receiver John Carter to graduation, seniors Justin Weber and Chris Robinson are being counted on this time around.
