It wasn’t the biggest touchdown in history, but as far as the Valley Vista football team is concerned, it was the most-needed.
The Monsoon finally got on the scoreboard on the final play of last week’s 62-6 loss to South Mountain. Playing in their first varsity season without seniors, Valley Vista was held scoreless for 11 quarters – and almost 12 – before quarterbackJosh Garcia found Isaiah Steelefor a 22-yard touchdown on the final play of the game.
“You would have thought we won the Super Bowl or something,” coach Jason Wilke joked about the wild celebration of fans and players after the score. “I’m glad we got that off our backs. Let’s hope that’s the first of many.”
Valley Vista has struggled this season like many first-year teams. Wilke says the Monsoon are improving, however.
“We seem to be having one breakdown every offensive play, but two weeks ago we were having two breakdowns each play,” Wilke said. “We’re getting closer. We need all 11 guys to make an offense work.”
Defensively, the Monsoon is trying to shore up a unit that has been allowing large clumps of rushing yards to the first three opponents.
“We’re still struggling against trap and counter (runs) since we’re a gap-controlled defense,” Wilke said. “(South Mountain) kept running the ball because they just took what we couldn’t stop.”
The Monsoon are hoping for bigger things this week when winless Camelback hosts Valley Vista. Camelback has lost to Cibola (21-14) and Rincon (21-7) and is desperate for a win just like the Monsoon.
